Airstream Toy Hauler: History, Models, and More!

Airstream Toy Hauler: History, Models, and More!

Does Airstream make toy haulers? In short, yes, Airstream has manufactured toy haulers, but only in a few select models such as the 2007 Basecamp, the 2010 Pan America, and the 2015 Eddie Bauer.

Although these Airstream models may no longer in production, that doesn’t mean you can’t get your hands on one. All this means is that you cannot purchase one directly from Airstream brand new, and will instead need to look for a used model that’s available for resale.

Many owners keep their campers in great shape, and you can find a used one that matches what you’re looking for in an Airstream toy hauler. All you need to do is some research ahead of time and look through sites like Craigslist, RVTrader, Offerup, Letgo, and Facebook Marketplace. Or any other marketplaces that offer the local sales of used goods.

What is a Toy Hauler?

At first glance, a toy hauler may look like a regular travel trailer. However, a toy hauler is a cross between a travel trailer and a cargo trailer. Toy haulers feature a large hatch and cargo bay typically with a ramp at the rear of the trailer to load in toys. These toys can include anything from dirt bikes, ATVs, motorcycles, UTVs, kayaks, bikes, or any other large gear you may want to bring along where you’re traveling to. The rear is like a garage on wheels.

In the front, toy haulers have all the traditional fittings of a travel trailer living space with a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. Smaller toy haulers will feature foldable dinette seats with a removable table or foldable bed space in the rear to serve a dual-purpose. This way while it’s being used to store the toys, you can fold up the area, and when it’s parked and unloaded you can use it as an eating or sleeping space.

The 2007 Airstream Basecamp

The smallest toy hauler of the bunch, the 2007 Airstream Basecamp weighs in at 2,750 lbs (not including your toy) with a cargo space that has enough room to store an ATV.

The foldable rear dinette opens up the interior cargo space for hauling while on the road. Once you reach your destination you can unload your toy and fold down the furniture at your campsite.

The Basecamp is a fantastic option if you want to stick to a more minimal size, traveling with 1 to 2 people, while still having the benefit of a toy hauler design. You can secure your cargo with the tie-down rings in the rear to stabilize the cargo your choose to carry.

The 2010 Airstream Pan America

Arguably the most popular Airstream toy hauler is the 2010 Pan America that was featured in the movie The Accountant (2016). Not only do its Hollywood features make it stand out, but it’s also a 34-foot long trailer with 550 cubic feet of garage space!

The following movie clip gives you an inside look at the Pan America:

Feel free to load up your motorcycles or other toys to hit the open road. Hence the name, “Pan America” meaning to cover or represent all of the Americas.

At a whopping 7,288 lbs dry weight (not including your toys), you’ll need a decent size truck to tow it safely. The average F-250 has a towing capacity between 12,300 to 15,000 lbs with plenty of room for gear and other additional weight.

While not traditionally a toy hauler that’s built for carrying motorcycles or ATVs, the Eddie Bauer edition features a rear sport hatch instead. The interior modular furniture folds away to give you nearly 400 cubic feet of additional space where you need it.

This storage area accommodates oversized gear such as kayaks, bicycles, and fishing tackle. You can also opt to attach a ramp to the rear to load on a motorcycle within the EB Airstream. The rear storage area includes tie-downs for securing cargo.

The Airstream Eddie Bauer also comes in two floorplans with the 25FB and the 27FB.

To Conclude

While Airstream has produced and manufactured toy haulers, it may not guarantee that they have them available in the current model year lineup. You can either look for an older used Airstream model, such as the few in this list, or wait to see if they produce another one in the future.

Due to how rare some of these Airstream models are, you may end up paying more for the unit, similar to a collectible car.
