Chacos vs. Tevas: Which Sandals are Better?

Chacos vs. Tevas: Which Sandals are Better?

“Sporty” sandals are in and they’re here to stay. Whether you’re an adventurer, hiker, or traveler, this style of shoe is great for you. They’re comfortable, lightweight, easy to pack, and great for when hot weather strikes.

While new brands are sneaking their way into the market, I think it’s still safe to say that Chaco and Teva are at the top.

In this article, I’m going to break down the pros and cons of each brand when comparing the average sandal. But, before you make a choice on what sandals are best for you, you’ll need to think about what you’re going to be using them for.

What to Consider

Each brand comes with its own benefits so you’ll need to consider what you’re going to be using these shoes for.

For example, if you’re going to be hopping in and out of the water with them you’re going to want shoes with a better grip on their soles. And if you’re going to be packing these for an overnight backpacking trip or in your carry-on for your next vacation you’ll probably want to go with the lighter option.

Be sure to consider how easy the sandals are to adjust, the fit, the design of the soles, what you’re willing to pay, and the look and feel of the sandals before making a purchase.

Chaco Review

The best thing about Chaco sandals is that they’re durable and built to last.

If you’re looking for a more supportive sandal, I’d recommend getting yourself a pair of Chacos. The soles are harder, making them stronger and great for rocky terrains. But that also means they take longer to break in. Some customers have even complained that it’s taken them months to feel comfortable in their new Chacos.

Chaco soles also have built in anti-slip technology so your feet won’t slide around in them. This is great if you’re looking for shoes to use in the water. If you're hiking through wet climates or walking through lakes, we recommend Chaco over Teva.

Another great feature of the Chaco sandal is the plastic buckles. When comparing them to the Teva velcro scraps, we feel that the plastic will last a longer time. But, Chacos will also take a little bit longer to adjust. This makes them not so great for someone looking to take their shoes on and off and adjust them quickly.

Also, Chaco is usually a bit pricier than Teva. But, they will give you a lifetime warranty.

PROS

CONS

  • More durable.
  • Plastic strap holder.
  • Anti-slip footbed.
  • Check
    Lifetime warranty.
  • Higher average price.
  • Not as easy to put on.
  • Takes time to break in.

Teva Review

If you’re looking for a lightweight sports sandal, Teva will work great for you.

Unlike Chacos, Tevas feel great right out of the box and their velcro straps make them extremely easy to slip on and off.

Another thing I think Teva does well is that they create breathable fabric. This is great because they won’t hold in as much sweat, water or dirt… meaning they won’t get as smelly as Chacos. It also means that Teva straps tend to dry faster after being soaked in water.

Unfortunately, with all these great benefits, there are some set backs. For example, velcro wears out, becomes fluffy, then unusable. Also, since Tevas are more lightweight, they tend to be a little less sturdy

Teva typically sells their sandals at a lower price but only offers a one year warranty.

PROS

CONS

  • Lightweight.
  • Lower average price.
  • Easy to slide on and off.
  • Check
Comfortable right out of the box.
  • Sole isn't as sturdy.
  • Velcro wears out.
  • Only has a one year warranty.

Best Chacos: Classic Z1 Model

Most Secure: Chaco Classic Z2 Model

Similar to the Z1 model but also has a toe strap. Some people feel like the toe strap keeps their foot more secure.

Best Tevas: Original Universal

Best Sole Support: Teva Original Midform

These are similar to the Teva Original Universal sandals but have double the sole support. Unfortunately, they are only available in women’s sizes.

Conclusion

Both Teva and Chaco are well-known brands amongst the hiking and outdoors adventure community so it's safe to say that any of their sandals should fit great and last you some time.

For the adventurer, I’d definitely choose a pair of Chacos over Tevas. But, if you’re looking for a comfy, lightweight sandal to travel in or slip on and off after a full day of hiking, Tevas are extremely comfortable and breathable.

Take some time to consider what you’re looking for in your sandals and I’m sure you’re going to love them.
