Is Neoprene Waterproof?

Is Neoprene Waterproof?

Divers, swimmers, and beachgoers alike have definitely come across Neoprene in their wetsuits, swimwear or other day-t0-day products. But, is it actually waterproof?

If you don’t already know, Neoprene is a synthetic rubber that is commonly used in wetsuits, swimwear, and tech products. This is because it is known to be waterproof and fast drying. So, the quick answer to “Is Neoprene Waterproof?” is yes.

Now, what does that actually mean? Let’s dive into it…

What is Neoprene?

Neoprene is actually a brand name that has become commonplace (think Ziploc, Velcro, etc.). The real name of this material is “polychloroprene” which really just means that it is an alternative to rubber. And just like rubber, it is flexible, lightweight, and waterproof.

Since Neoprene is a synthetic rubber, it lasts longer than normal rubbers. The material is great because it is flexible and lightweight while also being durable and blocking UV rays. This is important when surfing, diving, waterskiing, etc.

Additionally, because it is made out of this chemical material, it maintains these properties in a number of different temperatures, making it a good product to sell to the masses of people. But, the ability to withstand different temperatures comes from its chemically derived material.

What is Neoprene used for?

Neoprene is used for a variety of different reasons. Some of the main things that Neoprene is used for are wetsuits, swimsuits, and laptop cases. But you may also find Neoprene in sportswear, scuba gear, mousepads, gloves, and koozies. Neoprene works great on these items because they need to be both flexible and durable; which are the top two benefits that Neoprene has to offer. Neoprene fabric can be bought online or at many fabric stores in the U.S.

Is it safe?

Since Neoprene is a synthetic material, some people have shown concern about the safety of this material. Mainly, people’s safety if they are exposed to Neoprene for an extended period of time. Ultimately, it is relatively safe. But you have to understand that it is made out of chemicals, so if you’re concerned about these chemicals seeping into your skin, specifically, Chloroprene, then you may want to look into alternatives.

One of the biggest flaws of Neoprene is that it is non-biodegradable. This means it will end up in the landfill and contribute to the vast amount of chemical waste we produce each year. And to me, that’s another thing that makes it unsafe (for the environment).

Alternatives to Neoprene

Neoprene has been around for quite some time now and is on the relatively cheap side when it comes to creating synthetic rubber products. But, if you’re looking for other materials that compare, or are maybe just a little bit more eco-friendly, there are a ton of different options out there.

Some alternatives include:

Polyolefin

These plastics are considered non-toxic and are both durable and heat-resistant. This material is usually used to make straws and plastic wrap but you can find a number of different swimwear items that use this material. It is known to provide both insulation and warmth so people don’t love to use these swimsuits when it gets really hot outside. While Polyolefin is extremely durable, it doesn’t breathe as well as Neoprene does. (Also, if you’re curious, they make eco-friendly pipes too!)

Aquatherm

This is another brand that makes some great sportswear. It is extremely similar to Neoprene but typically more expensive. Competitive kayakers are known to use this material to protect them from the heat and deflect water particles. The difference of Aquatherm to other Neoprene products is that it is thinner and is said to be “more waterproof”. This just means that it wicks away moisture and dries quicker than Neoprene. Instead of wetsuits, this brand focuses on making drysuits that are used to protect the body in hot water.

Yulex

Yulex is what people are calling a “neogreen” material. The material is sourced from natural rubber found in the rainforest. It offers very similar benefits to Neoprene but is much better for the environment. Patagonia has been selling Yulex material and says it reduces CO2 emission by an astounding 80% compared to Neoprene.  Basically Yulex is just a more eco-friendly version of Neoprene.

Conclusion

Yes, Neoprene is waterproof.

But, now you know what the material is made out of and that there are a number of other great, waterproof options that compare. When it comes to wetsuits, swimsuits and even computer cases, I would say Neoprene has some stiff competition.

We’ve concluded that the best alternative, waterproof material, is Yulex. Another brand of Neoprene that is much more eco-friendly.
